Before doing this, we should be careful that the Gnus maintainers are
aware of these changes. Specifically, XEmacs package infrastructure
allows a file in a package to override a core file. So if the Gnus
people change the API in one of those files, maillib suddenly stops
working.
MIME is probably a Pandora's box that will drag in lots of files
into mail-lib, but it is probably inevitable unless we want `M-x
mail' to be a ASCII-only thing, which I think is wrong. What could
be a problem though, is if some MIME related package requires Mule,
but I don't think this is the case.
Gnus-related MIME is supposed to not require Mule. Things may have
changed, though.
