Async updates are supposed to fix this. i.e. tabs only get updated
when redisplay gets called. If this is still happening it would be
nice to know why.
Could the "window-excursion" code be guilty here?

You did, and I replied that it was currently impossible.
The question was rhetorical. Still, I wonder if background support
could be added to the widget itself (there is something called
XPM-Athena apparently able to do these things).
Could widget backgrounds work under Windows?
