Today I played with a very clever static checker that noticed that the
return value of setup_ccl_program is checked everywhere, except for the
call in ccl_init_coding_stream (mule-coding.c). So, to those who
understand this code, should the return value be checked there as well?

It doesn’t need to be; when the coding system is created, the validity of
the CCL programs is checked in the ccl_putprop calls that associate the CCL
programs with the coding systems. Throwing in an assertion is probably
worth it, though.

How do I reply to your messages without Gnus splitting my replies into
multiple parts? It doesn't seem to like your UTF-8 encoded stuff mixed
with my ASCII replies. I tried setting the coding system of the reply
buffer to UTF-8, but that mangled the parts of your message that I was
replying to (double encoding?). Is there some "reply to this message
using the coding system of the original message" function?
I'm coding system illiterate. It's about time I started learning how
coding systems work.

A few months ago, (setq mm-coding-system-priorities '(iso-8859-1 utf-8)) in
your ~/.xemacs/init.el would have done it.
Unfortunately, a bug seems to have crept in since then, and I didn’t notice
because my local installation is so hacked; the below test case now gives me
iso-8859-1 , which it shouldn’t, since neither UTF-8 \xc6\x92 (U+0192) nor
UTF-8 \xe5\x8d\x97 (U+5357) can be remapped to ISO 8859-1.

No; it’s not needed when the normal reply code isn’t buggy.

Not really. I've tried to figure out what Gnus is doing, but the code
is so recursive and poorly modularized for this purpose that I've
never got very far. The 'gnus-decoded coding system helps to confuse
things, as does latin-unity.
I'm ten days from Summer Freedom, I'll put this on my list of stuff to
think about.

Ah, sorry! What's even more sorry is I can't reproduce. :-( At least
if I understand you correctly; the designed result is to end up with a
buffer containing a bunch of ISO 646-IRV characters, with U+00F6,
U+0192, and U+5357 mixed in, and the form returns nil, right? That's
what I get.
Japanese language environment (probably not directly relevant).
Coding system of buffer 5wDxDXtyU is Mule/ISO7. I would think this
doesn't matter since the internal encoding is a UCS, but.... Maybe
you can update your test case to set an appropriate
buffer-file-coding-system to force the problem?
