mail-abbrev and sendmail are highly dependent on each other, the usual solution of placing the provide in the top of one file and requiring the other there as well doesn't work -- mail-abbrev has top-level code that need mail-mode-map, and sendmail has a macro that need to be evaluated for the byte compiler to do the right thing when compiling sendmail. The patch below should be a quick solution, a better would be to clean up the dependency between the files, but I'll save that for a rainy day (or as a exercise for the reader).
