 OK, I'll take a look.  I have to admit, I'm mildly biased against; I
 don't like putting functions into core that are equally well-served by
 a package.  Is there some reason why Steve Youngs's suggestion of
 whitespace-mode.el won't serve?  
I received your mail and replied before saw the newsgroup and Steve's reply, I
think using whitespace-mode will do. 
 Why does this need to be a core API? 
Just to be FSF compatible, if that is useful.
