Do you mean signing papers with FSF or just not setting a personal
copyright notice?
I mean signing papers. By international convention (with all of the
principal countries of the world members), not setting a personal
notice does not invalidate your copyright. So the only effect of
omitting the notice is to make it harder for people to determine who
owns what parts of the code. You should always add a personal
copyright notice unless you have a contract that automatically passes
that copyright to someone else.
It's a personal choice. A lot of people I respect have refused on
principle. But practically speaking, it provides the potential for
making code sharing a two-way street despite the inadvertant efforts
of RMS to prevent that.
