being stupid:
While I agree Mad's design would be superior in and off itself,
Michael's considerations are more important. So my vote is that our
`file-attributes' should be like GNU Emacs's. But I missed this
discussion:

Isn't the GNU API backwards compatible with ours? I read over them, and
it seemed to me it is.
