Hey, long time no see!
I'm honored that you even remember.
progress-feedback-dispatch-non-command-events()
(setq progress-feedback-use-echo-area t)
for the win.
Ummm. I took this as a clue to execute these forms, which I
did, and suddenly the thing seemed to work. So I put them
near the beginning of my init.el, started xemacs afresh and
voila! Problem gone.
Shall I call you Saint Stephen and render you acts of
worship? I got out of bed this morning thinking this is the
day I either fix xemacs or spend the day migrating to GNU
Emacs, which I really, really don't want to do.
Now, if you would, could you explain what sort of magic this
performs? The first is an undocumented defun. But
documentation on the variable suggests that if it's
necessary to display a progress meter (perhaps as it does
when it's taking its jolly time about fontifying a file?)
then it should display it somewhere that X11 doesn't know
about it'll crash?
we'll just end up removing the code; you'll have to use
GTK or something that provides its own progress gauge if
you care about that kind of eye candy.
Well I don't care about the progress gauge. I *do* care
about the fontification that happens in various modes. And I
*do* care about XEmacs not crashing -- ever.
Thank you a million times.
