I did that with xemacs -vanilla.
The Footnote-add-footenote worked! But the fi-Footnote-add-footnote did
not bugtrace attached

You need string-strip.el from
https://code.launchpad.net/s-x-emacs-werkstatt/
However, its used just once and I'm not sure, if it is still necessary.
Maybe write that line without stripping "*".
OTOH you may wait a little bit. Detected another bug:
If inside a commented section is must not insert
another comment. Need to introduce a check if inside a
comment.
