I've tried to use it for live updates to mathematical presentations in
Emacs. Thing is, when you want to type the math as you think and have
the computer do the formatting, there is no substitute for TeX.
Some early preview-latex code has been reused (possibly at some point
rewritten) in some computer algebra system interface in Emacs. I don't
remember which mode and system this was, but the result would have been
"live updates".
It would be interesting to integrate something like this into Emacs
calc.
