Perhaps I was too harsh. I just tried M-x hg-status and I get an error
right away.

But if I run hg-status from a buffer that is in an hg repo,
then it creates a Mercurial status buffer.
Yes.
I was expecting the buffer to behave a little like pcl-cvs or git
(which
says it's mostly compatible with pcl-cvs). Perhaps my expectations are
wrong. I guess I basically don't know how to drive it, and there's not
much documentation in mercurial.el about how to use it. Or maybe the
version I have is too old. There's a copyright from 2006.
I think that expectation is wrong: mercurial.el works with VC, so it's
not like pcl-cvs. The mercurial.el that comes with newer versions of
Mercurial is essentially unchanged, but notes:

That appears to be true for us as well.
