"Forked child base mismatch" using MKS Toolkit shell

When I start up XEmacs and run M-x shell, I get this line: Forked child base mismatch: 2000000 1000000! three times, then no prompt, and nothing happens when I type commands. I'm using the MKS Toolkit shell (ksh). This sounds like a problem reported previously (in http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-nt/199910/msg00107.html), and fixed in XEmacs 21.1.9 (http://www.xemacs.org/Releases/21.1.9.html), and, indeed, I don't have this problem with 21.1.9. But I do with 21.4.8.
