IMO ESD support is a crock and has always been. ESD has been
implicated in numerous crashes and other problems involving interrupts
and timing (which may or may not be XEmacs bugs, but they only show up
when ESD is configured). ESD insists on detecting itself even if an
explicit list of sound libraries is given to --with-sound.
ESD has historically been a very bad neighbor.
As far as I know the only fix offered for any of them is
--with-sound=none,..., so I'm going to default it off in future
releases of 21.4, if I can figure out how to defeat its viral feature.
