I believe the current behavior of the -name option is exactly the
standard way it is supposed to work, and is completely compatible with
other Xt applications. Try it with xterm, for example.
On the other hand, our handling of the application class is completely
non-standard. All other Xt applications have a constant application
class, AFAIK. This is why I continue to think our value of the
application class being dependent on whether we find XEmacs* resources
is a mistake. Ours is the only app where defining new resources
causes old ones to be ignored, adding yet another dimension to the
user's X resource debugging burden.
