You'll have to do some reading to figure out how to get matrices in
and out of Calc.

Thanks for pointing this out, but which version of calc, I checked the
2.02 version shipped with xemacs-21.4.14 and this function is not
included.
BTW do you know whether characters could be elements of a matrix or
it must be numbers.
