GNU Emacs' rect.el

I'm merging my changes into GNU Emacs' rect.el, and I found a function they use that we don't have: it's called `move-to-column-force' and it replaces multicolumn characters by spaces in order to move to the exact required column. Is it something that we want to do? If we don't, rectangles might get fucked up. If we do, we might loose characters.
