I expect that XEmacs 21.5 will make very rapid progress in the next
few months, but this depends very much on Ben Wing, and of course will
be accompanied by substantial instability for a while. Aidan Kehoe
also threatened to work on the "unknown characters problem", so that
may get done quickly even if Ben doesn't do it. (I'd like to work on
it but I don't think I have time to be the lead.)
I’ve written a patch based on Mike Fabian’s suggestion (that is, dynamically
assign unknown Unicode code points on encountering them to a Mule character
set created ad-hoc), and have been running with it locally for months. I
haven’t integrated it, partly because Ben has been stating that he’ll get to
great things, and partly because it’s buggy in the escape-quoted
auto-save-file case. (The mapping from unknown code points to Mule character
codes is not stable from one invocation to the next.)
