The functions there were entirely duplicative. That's really not

good reason for removing the API, but you'll have ot talk to Aidan
about that.

BTW this was the problem that your patch did not work.
I had the line
(define-specifier-tag 'mule-fonts)
After the call to cl-compat!
Since xemacs did not find that library the definition was
not parsed and xsymbol did not work.
