My $0.02 - I don't think we should ever do this unless we have
someone working on it full time. Chuck spent a long time getting the
current one right and fast. There's no way we are going to duplicate
that effort unless there is someone in the know doing it the whole
time.
Well, Chuck is no longer around to fix it, and we still use his
redisplay. I agree about working full-time, though.
And I still don't find redisplay that slow.
Have you ever tried using GNU Emacs and comparing them? Or, do you
use the more advanced XEmacs features such as inlined graphics, as in
Customize and W3 buffers? For me, the redisplay is horribly slow in
many such cases. Also, redisplay can't handle TTY optimizations at
all, which is a real embarrassment.
