I build on an iMac, and basically only use --with-mule and --with-xft options. Everything works as I expect. Once you've got xemacs running, you can get updated packages by using the menu Tools->Packages->Set Download site to select a close site, then Tools->Packages-> List and Install to list all the available packages. I haven't used that in a very long time, and I don't think it's used unless you enable it in your xemacs init file(s). But I could be wrong.
