configure --with-mule. I suppose there probably shouldn't be an error
if you don't configure with mule, though.
I build on an iMac, and basically only use --with-mule and --with-xft
options. Everything works as I expect.

I think the default location is /usr/local/share, so I create an
xemacs directory there and extract all the sumo tarballs. That gives
me the directories share/xemacs/xemacs-packages and
share/xemacs/mule-packages.

I think that just means the last time the tarball was made. Once
you've got xemacs running, you can get updated packages by using the
menu Tools->Packages->Set Download site to select a close site,
then Tools->Packages-> List and Install to list all the available
packages. You can select the packages you want to update.

What do you mean by "root hyperbole out of xemacs"? I haven't used
that in a very long time, and I don't think it's used unless you
enable it in your xemacs init file(s). But I could be wrong.
