Convention for identifying a particular set of sources?

How do I identify the set of sources that I'm using? Is it: * the value of "xemacs_extra_name" in version.sh which seems to be the output of 'hg identify'? * the last line in .hgtags? * the output of 'hg tip'? * * the date I did the last 'hg pull -u' * or something else?
