I reverted my X resources and everything worked fine. What had
happened is that I was trying different formats of a truetype
font name, trying to find one which xrdb would accept as a valid
name for an XEmacs default font. Evidently when it tried to make
sense of the font's name it got confused and neglected to read the
other following XEmacs resources. Sorry for the false alarm!
