I guess I was really commenting on "almost nobody will be able to
install XEmacs without specifying some options". I would hope that
configure without any options other than --prefix should at least
produce a working xemacs. It might be missing the bells and whistles,
but you should be able to edit with it.

On most of my linux systems, /usr/local is owned by root or at least
not writeable by me. But it is also true that on most of them, I also
know the root password (or have sudo privileges).

faster now than when Mule was added. At least I don't notice anything
