What's wrong with dividing the modeline into parts that are left-right
sensitive at the ends (but don't resize windows), and up-down
sensitive in the middle (but doesn't scroll the modeline)?
More precisely, I find that natural (eg, that's basically the way
WindowMaker works); do others find it unnatural? Implementation
difficulty is a different question.
