They probably have a Kerberos-enabled FTP client. Add the Kerberos-
defeating flag to `efs-ftp-program-args' (usually it's "-g" IIRC).
For Mandrake, site-start.el is a good place, I think. (Rather than
default.el. If you use a session manager like desktop.el, then your
init.el may try to access remote files before default.el gets loaded.)

My nostalgia for Icon makes me forget about any of the bad things. I don't
