[picking up this dead thread after 9 months during which I had no time
to pursue it]
Just a negative datapoint in case anyone else ever picks this up: In
response to a new Cygwin release which fixes some obscure pthread- and
signal-related bugs, I updated both my Cygwin (to 1.7.34-005) and gcc
(to 4.9.2-1), pulled and updated XEmacs (to 21.5-b34 "kale" 83e5c3cd6be6),
did make distclean and make, but no change to the problem. That is,
M-x shell still fails in default configuration, doing
(setq process-connection-type nil)
allows it to work, with complaints.
So, no progress :-(.
