 In the meantime, would it be possible to use an #ifdef to
 conditionally replace all returns in that function with exit(1)
 (preferably preceded by printing your 2001 quote!), and thus placate
 the static-checking gods? 
I was thinking of having it sing "Daisy" first, but I can settle for the
quote.  Sure, that will work.
