I'm wondering if you are referring to the new-fangled buffer-tab
thinga-ma-jig? Perhaps try:
(customize-set-variable 'gutter-buffers-tab-visible-p nil)

I noticed that you had VM version 7.04, have you tried 7.07? If
you're still having the same problems after upgrading VM, I'd suggest:
M-x vm-submit-bug-report RET
That'll get all the right info to all the right people. :-)
