package and then untarring the new one. The new one should be untarred to a
temp directory and then the old one moved out the way and the new one moved
in.
If you're going to do this, you get into issues of quota and physical
disk limits. Running out of disk/quota should fail gracefully. If
this gets implemented it should probably be made optional.
As a backup, I prefer keeping the previous compressed tarball around
even with buildable source available.
