I'm not interested in the window dimensions you see, but in the values
of the expressions (frame-width) and (frame-height).
the value of the expressions were 36 and 3 respectively, and the modeline
was longer than 36 characters
at the moment i'm unable to help further, due to hardware problems in the
machine where the offending behaviour was observed
