Better (for this purpose) is to revert the other variables to
default,
and then customize the PDF entry of `TeX-output-view-style' to "open
%o". (My main notebook has decided to die, and I took this
opportunity to start configuring the new one, so discovered this
little-known fact. :-)
Ha! Sorry about your notebook, but that solution works, and
this beast now does the right thing when I want to run the
View command from TeX-command-list.
Problem solved. I'll climb back in my hole for a few more months.
