It's already optional and non-default. There's no point in removing
it, unless something clearly better is available on all platforms
where Xft is used. The problem is that for Asian users, antialiased
fonts are hardly optional, and for the rest of the world they are
highly desirable. Either Pango or raw Xft should be default in the
next public release.
Besides the proposals to improve Xft and create a Pango-based "XEmacs
device" (the lowlevel implementation of redisplay), AFAIK getting the
GTK2 or GTK3 port in good shape would also provide this.
