This works. What is the significance of the `::'s?
It separates the different parts of the paths. user::override::late.
The `user' part is not used if you start -vanilla. The 21.0 lisp
directories come between `override' and `late'.

I have had some problems with making the packages, arinsing largely
from
ignorance of the dependencies. I finally found the circular
dependencies involving gnus, tm, w3 and rmail (among others). Is `vm'
the recommended minimal mailer configuration?
Yes it is, but the circular dependencies shouldn't really exist (but
do). For example, gnus ought to be able to build without tm, w3, or
rmail, and w3 should certainly not be dependent on gnus.
The w3 dependency seems
particularly unfortunate. It's the first one I deleted, purely on
account of size. May I assume I need all of these dependencies to get
MIME?
If you are using the latest VM, you will not need anything else for
MIME. You will need w3 if you want to read html messages inline, but
not if you don't. tm is pretty much obsolete, since the current VM
and beta Gnus do MIME themselves.
What about Mule-ised mail? What is the minimum requirement?
There is no such thing, really. Mule is an encoding system for
XEmacs. It doesn't have anything to do with mail.
One of the tm info files did not compute:

I have 3.12 of the texinfo stuff, with makeinfo at 1.68.
I don't know about this.
There also seems to be a problem when compiling the mule packages.
I
did not have edict, egg-its or skk; only leim, locale and mule-base.
The make exited the directory without doing much. When I removed the
missing entries from the Makefile, the compile seemed to work without
complaint.
Neither do I know about this.
Many thanks. My initial encounter with XEmacs (and emacs) was full
of
sound and fury, but I have actually come to like it.
Btw, Colin, were you not once in .au?
Not me. I live in NYC, and I've been all over Europe, but no other
