You could start XEmacs with -vanilla, but I believe that disables all
init file processing, which might not be what you want.
You could also try installing more recent packages from
xemacs.org,
using the procedure documented at [1]. You can tell XEmacs to install
them in $HOME/.xemacs/xemacs-packages (look for the section "User
Package directories" in that same web page). When you restart XEmacs,
it will use those packages in preference to the system-installed ones.
When you're done, you can just blow away the entire
$HOME/.xemacs/xemacs-packages tree.
If the latest packages from
xemacs.org don't work, you could try
replacing them with the versions you know are okay, though you might
need to do some refactoring to fit the expected directory structure.
