Its only logically 1 in vi thinking, where point is *on* a
character. Not in Emacs thinking, where point is *between*
characters.
Of course point is between characters. `C-x =' currently returns the
column left of the character. There is no reason why it couldn't
return the column on the right (i.e. 1 at beginning of line), as it is
written in the modeline.
The block cursor is what confuses people into vi thinking. The bar
cursor should be default.
Bar cursor is hard to find on the screen; it's too narrow.
