requires using the maintainer-only tar-ball target before, and
tar-ball checks out a fresh copy from CVS before building.
Since this stuff is undocumented and maintainer-only, it is not a
problem per se that it only run's on the maintainers' operating
systems.
It wouldn't hurt, if we'd use "cp -pr" instead, AFAICS.
