I tried both, and you're right. Either not running display-time or
compiling --with-xpm=no avoids the problem entirely.
Ok, so somewhere the modeline is not being handled properly by either
the garbage collector or the string handling routines. I haven't
tracked it down yet. Are there any modeline experts in the house?
