Well, I said it. -R/usr/dt/lib is not added to the link path, so
conftests die with "killed: cannot locate libXm.so.3" or the like.
Do you have LD_LIBRARY_PATH set in your environment? This might
explain why it works for you.
I haven't attempted 21.2 yet, but AFAIK there is no need for a -R if
the library is in the same place for both build and execution.
