did so and it's doing pretty well. It now builds OK and loads up just
fine. It re-sizes purespace and loads again. Almost home, but then...

And, indeed, xemacs does not have execute privs, although I assume the
738 Memory fault is the real source of the problem.
I then re-built the whole thing with gcc-2.7.2.3 and got about the
same error (/bin/sh: 9663 Memory fault - core dumped). So it does not
appear to be compiler related.
I will re-build with debugging as soon as I get a few minutes so that
I can (possibly) tell something from the core file.
