 Ok, I do, but sorry to nag: on one hand you recommend to have
 file-coding on for a very popular linux dist on the other hand you
 don't want it as default, why is this? 
Personally, I think arguing about defaults (particularly build-time
defaults) is largely a waste of time.  The /instantiation/ of a
particular default in a package, on the other hand, can make an
enormous difference, because nowadays relatively few users compile
from source.
