You can also change the number of characters to use for the gutter
tabs
I like to have those tabs more than two or three.
The other thing that you can do is change the default font for the
gutter tab so that it takes less room by using a smaller sized condensed font:

Yes, these could both help, but neither is a workaround that helps in
every case.
