How to install XEmacs Beta

(this is a repeat of a so-far unaswered question) How do I locally install the XEmacs beta (21.2.x) if I've also locally installed 21.1.x? In other words, I built 21.1.x with --prefix=$HOME and did an actual 'make install'. I want to play with the beta series but I want everything to coexist so that 21.1.x does not get trashed. Can this be done? Also, hw do I handle the packages?
