And this does what ? Simply untarring the packages into the correct place_after_ I installed a (naked) XEmacs (i.e. one without packages) succeeded, too (i.e. I could use my .emacs). But one question remained unanswered: which packages need to be available _before_ building XEmacs ? VM ? Gnus ? And how do I know before I download the packages and have a running 21.0bXX which gives me package-*-functions ? Holger
