Fontifying anything with 21.4.13 is *very* slow, the progress meter

This is a Red Hat 9 box. 21.4.12 built with exactly same options
and setup doesn't exhibit this behaviour.

The gcc is "gcc version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)" and
 glibc is "glibc-2.3.2-27.9".
I'm seeing the same behavior on a RedHat 7.3 box with gcc 3.2.2. I
tried to erase something like 90% of an enormous bug report from a reply
I was writing in Gnus, and it froze up completely somewhere in
font-lock. I let it sit for something like 10 minutes while I did other
stuff. I had to C-g C-g to get control back, because a single C-g would
drop me straight back into font-lock again. I finally succeeded by
defining a keyboard macro that did C-x C-x C-w and running it, so that
font-lock wouldn't kick in between defining the region and killing it.
