Alt/Meta query

I recently installed Mandrake 7.2's distribution of Linux. With it came Xemacs (I don't recall the version, 21.1 or something near that I believe) When that version of Xemacs was installed the Left Alt behaved (properly in my opinion) as Meta. Recently I installed the current beta and this has changed. Please note that I didn't change ANYTHING else about my linux installation. Now, the question that remains is, how do I get my left alt key functioning again as a Meta instead of Alt. I also can't use the left windows key on the keyboard because Sawfish captures that. It may be a petty thing for me to desire this, but other programs (such as tinyfugue within the gnome-terminal) seen to also behave properly in regards to Meta. Are there any suggestions to fix this?
