Yes, in /bin the sh is a copy of bash, but my path has the cygwin bin
first, and that is sh (if you can follow that)

I just encountered the same problem. My solution was to
reset my path to
PATH=/bin/sh:$PATH. I believe the reason is that I have
the updated (a)sh
form Chris Faylor in /bin/sh but the original sh in the
cygwin bin directory.
