Building directly from the sources fails early in configure - looks like
gcc8 defaults to -Werror!?

Was this the tip, or the last release? The tip definitely has configure
support and work-arounds for address space layout randomisation, which will
give the sort of error you’re posting. If I remember correctly the last
release does not include this support. Good argument for a new release!
