This, I think, indicates that the dired buffer doesn't contain what
dired though it should. From my experience that data has been inserted
into some other buffer. This can be a number of leading spaces in the
first few columns of a buffer, sometimes even the first dired buffer
line as well. Look around in your other buffers for evidence of this kind.
So the damage is already done when the mangled sublist problem is observed.
I produced this once in an attempt to track this done. After that I
dropped lazy-lock. It has helped in reducing the number of errors
considerably, but as I said, it resurfaced again for some months ago.
