The "use faces" one is to some bad interaction in the way ediff defines
local variables that are customized. You can change this by moving the
ediff-...-local macro call afterthe corresponding defcustom.
I sent a patch to the ediff maintainer but it has not been applied yet
to the XEmacs package I believe.
Maybe the other variables have the same problem,
