Damn. I'm wrong on _all_ counts.
The blanching happens under -vanilla when I invoke the size changing
stuff.
As near as I can tell, XEmacs is now picking one medium kanji font and
one bold kanji font (of different sizes) and using them at all sizes
of the default face (or whatever it is that is changed by Options |
Sizes).
It is not clear to me how kanji fonts/sizes can be changed via
customize faces or Options | Fonts/Sizes, and that is clearly
unacceptable, if it's not somehow my fault.
Enough stuff is screwed up here that probably I've managed to get
custom (or something) unsynched from the rest of XEmacs; I'll pick up
a release tarball and update all my packages tomorrow or so and see if
that fixes this.
